That’s why many couples choose to have both — a lawyer to make the marriage legally official, and a symbolic officiant to make the moment personal.

DO WE NEED TO HAVE A LEGAL CEREMONY TOO?

Yes — a symbolic ceremony in Costa Rica has no legal validity, so if you want your marriage legally recognized, you’ll need to complete that process separately, either in Costa Rica or in your home country.

Can we do both on the same day, or do they need to be on different dates?

Both — it’s entirely up to you. Many couples do both the same day: the symbolic ceremony is the one everyone experiences, while the attorney present doesn’t need to read any legal documentation out loud, only collect the signatures of the couple and witnesses.

I’m Grettel Gutiérrez, a symbolic wedding officiant with over 20 years of experience in tourism and 15 years in the wedding industry. From the very first ceremony I led, I felt this was more than a profession — it was a calling. Several years ago, I discovered the sacred magic of cacao. Learning about its history and its significance in Indigenous traditions opened my heart even more, and guiding cacao tours only deepened that connection. National parks and protected refuges often go a step further, requiring a separate commercial permit for professional photography or for an officiant to lead a ceremony on-site, beyond the standard entrance ticket.

Costa Rica’s weather shifts throughout the year, with temperatures holding steady between 24–29°C (75–84°F) and a real chance of rain year-round — especially in the rainy season.

That’s part of the charm of a tropical elopement, and if the sky doesn’t cooperate, we’re always ready with a covered backup plan, so your ceremony goes on rain or shine.

DRY SEASON | DECEMBER – APRIL

The most requested season for outdoor ceremonies, with the best odds of clear skies from morning through sunset. Weather stays sunny and predictable — ideal if your ceremony (or ritual) depends on being fully outdoors, like a beach or open-air blessing.

GREEN SEASON | MAY – NOVEMBER

Mornings tend to stay clear, with skies often opening up again after a strong afternoon downpour — a pattern that repeats for months. The landscape turns lush and vivid, and a covered backup space keeps your ceremony worry-free no matter what the sky does.

HEAVIEST RAINS | JULY – SEPTEMBER

These months bring the heaviest rain, sometimes affecting roads to more remote locations. It doesn’t rule out a ceremony — many couples still marry beautifully during this time — but it does mean planning around a reliable indoor or covered space from the start.

On average, a symbolic wedding ceremony lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, though the exact length depends on the rituals you choose to include. A ceremony with music, readings, or guest participation naturally runs a little longer, while an intimate ceremony for just the couple — the most common choice — tends to stay closer to 20 minutes.

Can we write our own vows?

Yes, and we always encourage it — vows written by the couple carry far more emotion and feel truly personal. If you’re not sure where to start, your officiant can give you a simple structure to guide you, so writing your own words feels easy rather than overwhelming.

How much does a symbolic wedding officiant cost in Costa Rica?

Pricing depends on what you’d like included in your ceremony, with packages starting at $350 plus legal taxes. That can include additional rituals woven into the celebration itself — like a cacao ceremony.

Can we include a cacao ceremony in our wedding or elopement?

Yes — it’s one of our most requested rituals, and it can be added to either a full wedding or an intimate elopement. The ritual typically includes the taking of cacao, an offering to the earth, the couple’s vow and ring exchange (optional), and a final blessing with cacao to seal their bond.

What languages are available for the ceremony?

Our officiants speak both Spanish and English fluently, so you can have a beautiful ceremony in whichever language feels most like you.

What happens if it rains on the ceremony day?

This is an adventure elopement in the tropics, so rain is part of the charm — if it happens, we lean into it rather than fight it. Costa Rica carries a real chance of rain year-round, especially during the rainy season, so it’s worth planning for. Some couples love the look of pretty umbrellas in the rain, but if that’s not your style, there’s always a covered backup plan for the ceremony, especially when guests are involved.

 

How many guests can attend?

As many as you’d like — the guest count is entirely up to you. If you’d like guests to actively take part in the ritual itself, we recommend keeping it to six people or fewer to preserve the intimacy. If it’s just the two of you doing the ritual while guests watch, there’s no limit on numbers.

Do we need witnesses?

No — a symbolic ceremony doesn’t require witnesses. That’s only necessary if you’re also bringing in a legal officiant to complete the legal side of your marriage at the same time; in that case, witnesses are required for the legal part, not the symbolic one.

Do you coordinate everything with the officiant for us?

Yes — if you’d like a full-service package with coordination, our planning team can take care of it, so you can enjoy the complete experience without managing the logistics yourself.
