Real Families Across Costa Rica

I’m Joice Dahianna, and together with my husband Diego — the best team I could ask for — we’ve spent years chasing golden light through cloud forest trails and along beach shorelines just to capture the exact way your family moves together. No forced poses, no rehearsed script — just real laughter, tiny hands to hold, and whatever the weather decides to give us that day. Every session in this collection happened exactly the way it looks: unscripted, full of joy, and completely yours.

Real families, real Vacation Memories

Every gallery you see here comes from a real families who traveled to Costa Rica on vacation and wanted to bring home more than souvenirs — a genuine memory of their trip together. These sessions happen with volcano views over Arenal, barefoot walks beside the La Fortuna or Llanos de Cortés waterfalls, or golden light on the beach at sunset, with grandparents cheering, parents laughing, and kids running wherever they please.

The reason is almost always the same: «the kids are growing up so fast, and I want to remember this trip while they were still this small» — or simply, wanting to hold on to how much fun the whole family had together. These aren’t posed portraits. They’re sessions built around play, so what you take home is the memory, not just the photo.

Vega Family Session at Reserve in Monteverde

This was our second session together — the first marked their eldest daughter’s first birthday, and this one celebrated the youngest turning one, in the Curicancha Reserve. It’s one of my favorite spots for families with little ones: real cloud forest and gardens, no long hike required.

Schaelagel Family session at Tamarindo Diriá Hotel

This family visits Tamarindo often, but this trip was different — their first time coming together as a family to Costa Rica, and they wanted a real memory of it. We kept it simple and shot right at their hotel, steps from the beach, part of their vacation, not a separate event to plan.

Jacky Family Session at Hotel Belmar, Monteverde.

We planned this one for sunrise, chasing soft early light through the trees — and the kids had exactly the right morning energy for it. We spent the whole session playing through the gardens at Hotel Belmar, laughing our way from one corner to the next, and it showed in every single frame.

Crosby Family Session at Arenal Volcano

A family session with the volcano watching over us. We went up to one of La Fortuna’s most iconic viewpoints and moved between two of its prettiest corners, including the lake below — laughing our way through both. If one gallery feels unmistakably Costa Rica, it’s this one, hands down.

Morales Family Session at La Fortuna Waterfall

This one takes a little more effort — about 500 steps down — but for adventurous kids, it’s worth every one of them. We made our way down together, step by step, all the way to the base of La Fortuna waterfall, and let them splash around in the cool water at the end as their well-earned reward.

WHAT COUPLES SAY

Real families, real memories

Real families from around the world share their experience working with a trusted Costa Rica family photographer.

We were referred to Joice through our event planner and booked her for a milestone event, as well as a family session the following day. She was wonderful to work with in advance of the event — great with communication and sharing recommendations and very flexible and accommodating with my requests. And we could not be more thrilled with her work.

I LOVE the photos not only because she captured the emotion of many special moments during the ceremony with such perfection, but also because the coloring is so rich and beautiful. When it came to the family photos immediately following the ceremony, as well as our family session, she was especially skilled at giving us direction to avoid photos that felt stiff or awkward.

At both sessions, she was prompt, patient and so friendly, and we never felt rushed. I highly, highly recommend her!

GOOD TO KNOW

FAQs

Everything families usually ask before booking their Costa Rica family photography — if your question isn’t here, write to Joice directly.

Do You Photograph Family Sessions Outside The Locations Shown Here?

Yes — the waterfalls, beaches, and forests in this portfolio are some of my favorites, but they’re not the only ones. If you have a specific spot in mind, anywhere in Costa Rica, let’s talk it through and see how we can make it happen.

How Do I Know Which Package Matches The Style I See In These Photos?

Every elopement in this portfolio was shot the same way, regardless of package — the real difference is coverage time and locations. Tell me which photos you’re drawn to, and I’ll help you find the package that fits.

Will My Family Photos Be Featured In Your Portfolio?

Yes. We always ask for your authorization before featuring your photos publicly — on our website, portfolio, or social media. If you’d prefer to keep your wedding private, we respect that completely, and this is written into your contract from the start, so there’s never any ambiguity about how your images are used.

How Long Does A Family Session Take, And How Many People Can Join?

A typical family session runs about 1 hour. For the best results, I recommend keeping it to a maximum of 5 people — a nuclear family group lets us slow down and capture more detailed, intentional moments together. That said, larger families are absolutely welcome. For bigger groups, we simply break things into smaller subgroups throughout the session so everyone still gets that same level of attention, with a small additional fee for each person beyond the 6th.

Do You Photograph In The Rain, Like Some Of The Sessions Shown Here?

Always. Costa Rica’s rainy season brings some of my favorite light and some of the most romantic photos I’ve ever taken — rain has never stopped an elopement I’ve photographed, and it won’t stop yours either.
